Self hypnosis is a valuable self help skill. You can learn it very easily, and the more often you use it, the better you’ll get at it. Discover how in this article.
All hypnosis is self hypnosis. When you’re hypnotized by someone else, that person takes charge of helping you to relax by distraction, and giving you suggestions. You can learn to do it for yourself.
A hypnosis session has three elements: relaxation and distraction, suggestions, and the return. Once you know how they work, and how hypnosis feels, you can use “instant” hypnosis in your everyday life.
Why use hypnosis? Simply to get more out of life. You can eliminate bad habits like overeating and smoking, and develop good habits. You can also develop a powerful memory, and an out-going personality.
Read these five tips, then use them.
Self hypnosis starts by creating a private space for yourself. Close your office door. Lie down, or sit in a chair with your feet on the floor. Keep your back straight, whether you’re lying down or sitting. Take several deep breaths.
Create a daydream. Imagine yourself in your favorite place: on a beach, in the mountains - anywhere you choose. You’re completely relaxed, just enjoying yourself lying in the sun.
Once you’re completely relaxed, you can give yourself suggestions. You can write a script (open your eyes to read it), or just repeat affirmations.
Now count yourself back to consciousness - five, four, three, two, one - wide awake!
The more often you practice self hypnosis, the more successful you’ll be. Choose one thing to work on - overeating, getting a better memory, eliminating shyness - and work with it for at least two weeks.

Some people will try anything to lose weight. There is an endless supply of books, videos, diet pills and exercise products out there. One intriguing technique is hypnosis. Can hypnosis help with weight-loss?
The answer is a definite - maybe. Studies have shown that while hypnosis can help people lose weight, it cannot be used alone. Also, a single hypnosis session is not enough to achieve lasting weight loss.
Hypnosis is an attractive solution because its main principle is focused relaxation. The stereotypical hypnosis session, with someone waving a watch while intoning, “You are getting sleepy.” is actually a primitive method to get the subject to relax. Modern techniques call for the subject to be sitting or laying down comfortably while listening to quiet relaxation suggestions. Once the subject seems completely relaxed, the hypnotherapist can proceed with weight-loss suggestions.

Some of these suggestions are geared toward shifting the subject’s attitude: “I am slim and beautiful.” “I can easily achieve my ideal weight.” Other suggestions provide techniques for dealing with specific situations: “When I am hungry, I will flex my fingers.” “When I eat a meal, I will eat vegetables.”
Studies have shown that hypnosis can be effective when it is used with a behavior modification program. Scientists believe that hypnosis reinforces the healthy eating techniques taught by the program. Because hypnosis is a relaxation technique designed to increase focus, people are better able to concentrate and practice the new techniques.
Unfortunately, many people misrepresent hypnosis as magic. There is an increasing supply of “miracle” weight-loss CDs and seminars claiming you can lose weight after a single hypnosis session. Many people desperate to lose weight pay $25 or more for a CD that will not help them at all.
On the other hand, hypnosis may help you if you are a “stress-eater”. If you know you run to the cookie jar in moments of anxiety, hypnosis can help you relax and deal with the stress in a more positive way. By focusing on your breathing, you can defeat the fight-or-flight response and learn to relax. Once you are relaxed, your desire to raid the cookie jar should diminish.
Next time you find yourself in a stressful situation, try finding a quiet corner. Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Imagine yourself sitting by a quiet stream and slowly relax every part of your body. Once you feel fully relaxed tell yourself, “I am completely relaxed.” “I am confident.” “I can handle this situation.” Repeat phrases such as this until you feel satisfied. Then, slowly resume your day-to-day life. You will find that you are much more relaxed and you may even find your urge to nosh is gone.
This is only a very basic self-hypnosis technique. To find out more, consult a professional, licensed hypnotherapist. Hypnosis will not solve all your problems, including weight-loss.
If you consider hypnosis a relaxation technique, you may find it very effective. However, do not consider it your only weight-loss tool. Combine it with a sensible eating and exercise program and you may find that you feel and look better.
