Some people will try anything to lose weight. There is an endless supply of books, videos, diet pills and exercise products out there. One intriguing technique is hypnosis. Can hypnosis help with weight-loss?
The answer is a definite - maybe. Studies have shown that while hypnosis can help people lose weight, it cannot be used alone. Also, a single hypnosis session is not enough to achieve lasting weight loss.
Hypnosis is an attractive solution because its main principle is focused relaxation. The stereotypical hypnosis session, with someone waving a watch while intoning, “You are getting sleepy.” is actually a primitive method to get the subject to relax. Modern techniques call for the subject to be sitting or laying down comfortably while listening to quiet relaxation suggestions. Once the subject seems completely relaxed, the hypnotherapist can proceed with weight-loss suggestions.

Use affirmations to lose weight
Can you “think thin” and make it work? Yes you can. Weight loss affirmations really work. Here’s what one person said about affirmations with Sculptor 3:
“I purchased Sculptor 3 several months ago. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Over the years, I’ve spent thousands of dollars purchasing all sorts of “self help” books and tapes. Your program is by far the most satisfying to date. It is truly amazing–a well thought out and well developed concept. Additionally, your ongoing support via the newsletters and the extraordinary amount of peripheral materials, sources, and resources make this program one of the best that I have seen.”

Some of these suggestions are geared toward shifting the subject’s attitude: “I am slim and beautiful.” “I can easily achieve my ideal weight.” Other suggestions provide techniques for dealing with specific situations: “When I am hungry, I will flex my fingers.” “When I eat a meal, I will eat vegetables.”
Studies have shown that hypnosis can be effective when it is used with a behavior modification program. Scientists believe that hypnosis reinforces the healthy eating techniques taught by the program. Because hypnosis is a relaxation technique designed to increase focus, people are better able to concentrate and practice the new techniques.
Unfortunately, many people misrepresent hypnosis as magic. There is an increasing supply of “miracle” weight-loss CDs and seminars claiming you can lose weight after a single hypnosis session. Many people desperate to lose weight pay $25 or more for a CD that will not help them at all.
On the other hand, hypnosis may help you if you are a “stress-eater”. If you know you run to the cookie jar in moments of anxiety, hypnosis can help you relax and deal with the stress in a more positive way. By focusing on your breathing, you can defeat the fight-or-flight response and learn to relax. Once you are relaxed, your desire to raid the cookie jar should diminish.
Next time you find yourself in a stressful situation, try finding a quiet corner. Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Imagine yourself sitting by a quiet stream and slowly relax every part of your body. Once you feel fully relaxed tell yourself, “I am completely relaxed.” “I am confident.” “I can handle this situation.” Repeat phrases such as this until you feel satisfied. Then, slowly resume your day-to-day life. You will find that you are much more relaxed and you may even find your urge to nosh is gone.
This is only a very basic self-hypnosis technique. To find out more, consult a professional, licensed hypnotherapist. Hypnosis will not solve all your problems, including weight-loss.
If you consider hypnosis a relaxation technique, you may find it very effective. However, do not consider it your only weight-loss tool. Combine it with a sensible eating and exercise program and you may find that you feel and look better.

May 16th, 2008 — Self-hypnosis
Self-hypnosis is a great technique to focus and also to solve many problems and conditions. Here is a seven step list to help you learn the basics of self hypnosis.
1. Find a quiet place in which you sit or lay down comfortably. Allow yourself 30 minutes for your session. Some people find it best to turn down the lighting and play a CD of soft nature sounds. Close your eyes and take several long, slow deep breaths. Try to release any stress from your body. Totally clear your mind.
You can put anyone under your spell - use hypnosis on others and get them to do what you want.
2. Picture yourself descending a long staircase very slowly. Count each step and picture every detail. Imagine every detail of the staircase: the railing, the floor, the ceiling. Breathe slowly in and out during your entire descent.
3. When you’ve reached the bottom of the staircase, begin speaking slowly and calmly to yourself about the problem at hand. Use the present tense and positive statements. For example: “I am very relaxed.” “I am confident.” “I can complete my work well.” “If I feel the urge to smoke, I will tap a pencil instead”. “If I want to eat, I will stretch my fingers instead.” (It helps if you have written out a series of statements before your session starts.
4. Repeat your statements as often as you need to until you feel satisfied. Wait a few minutes to enjoy your relaxed state.
5. Picture yourself slowly climbing the stairs, counting backward for each step. When you reach the top, continue to breathe slowly and open your eyes. You should feel completely relaxed and refreshed.
6. If you have been lying down, be very careful when you stand up. You could get dizzy because your blood pressure dropped while you were lying down.
7. Slowly resume your routine.
These are only a few very basic techniques to get you started. There are many others. Some people like to imagine they are in the mountains or sitting by the ocean. Other people start the process by tensing then relaxing each body part in turn. The point is to gradually relax, thus increasing your focus. Try several of these techniques until you find the one that works best for you.
While hypnosis won’t solve every problem, you will find that this simple technique can help you feel much better. If you are on medications, continue taking them even if you feel better after your self-hypnosis session. You may want to buy a self-hypnosis book or CD to help you.
You may also consider visiting a professional hypnotherapist for additional help. Be sure the hypnotherapist is licensed and does not make over-inflated claims about his or her services. Hypnosis relies on trust between the therapist and the client, so if you have any concerns about the hypnotherapist’s skills, look elsewhere.
You can use self-hypnosis in many ways. Some people use it to quit smoking or to stop bad eating habits. Other people use it to help them focus on their work, while still others use it to combat anxiety and depression. There are studies that show hypnosis can even help cure warts. Why not give it a try and see what self hypnosis can do for you?

Discover power of hypnosis with self hypnosis.
Self-help hypnosis is a very popular topic these days. How do you know if it will work for you?
Many people are learning self hypnosis for a variety of reasons. Some people say it helps them concentrate on a task. Other people believe it helps them with depression or anxiety. Still others believe it helps them break bad habits, such as smoking or overeating.
Hypnosis can be an effective technique to help break specific behavior patterns. While you are in a very relaxed state, you are given suggestions or commands. Hypnosis experts believe that these suggestions or commands bypass your conscious mind and accepted by your subconscious mind, helping you to break old habits without realizing it.
Many people like the idea of self-help hypnosis because it is convenient. You follow the techniques when you have the time. You do not have to make appointments with a hypnotherapist and you can do the techniques in the privacy of your own home. This way, if you feel awkward or have trouble following the program at first, no one will know but you.
However there are disadvantages to self hypnosis. First of all, it may be difficult to find a good training program. There are many books and audio programs that teach self-hypnosis. However, it is difficult to tell the good programs from the bad ones until you’ve actually bought the program and most books and audio programs cannot be returned.
Next, while self-hypnosis can be very easy to learn, you must have the discipline to use the technique on a regular basis. In many cases, lack of discipline can be part of the original problem. For example, you may want to quit smoking but lack the will-power to do so. If you lack will-power, will you be able to discipline yourself to follow the self-hypnosis training?
In addition, it may be difficult to find the time and the place to practice self-hypnosis. Most self-hypnosis experts recommend a 30-minute session. If you are a busy mother who wants to lose weight, you may find it difficult to find time away from the kids to concentrate on hypnosis.
That said, self-hypnosis can be effective in some circumstances. However, three things are necessary: desire, belief and expectancy. You must desire to make a change. You must believe that the script you use (the suggestions you make to yourself) will work. You must also expect that a change is taking place.
Here is an example of how these three factors work: Let’s say you are a writer and want to use self-hypnosis to get yourself through a period of writer’s block. That’s the desire: to get through writer’s block. But you must also believe self-hypnosis will work for you. Otherwise, you may become more tense and your writer’s block will worsen. You must also expect the script will work so you can relax and concentrate on the script.
Hypnosis can help you break certain habits and perceptions by introducing new methods and thought patterns. If it is done carefully and consistently, self-hypnosis can be an easy way to use mind over matter.
